Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 - Martinsville Speedway Race Odds

Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500
Sun, March 21, 2010
Martinsville Speedway
Martinsville, VA - 1:00 pm

The sixth race of the season will be staged at Martinsville Speedway on March 28. The Tums Fast Relief 500 will be the fifth-to-last race of the season, when the championship battle is taking shape and the contenders are separating themselves from the pretenders.

Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500
NASCAR returns to the exciting Martinsville Speedway, where action is never in short supply. This 500-lap NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race held at the 0.526 miles (0.847 km) Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, in the hills of Virginia, is the short track racing called Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500

Darlington is the oldest superspeedway, but Martinsville is the oldest track, period. What is now known as Nextel Cup began as Strictly Stock in 1949, and there have been races at Martinsville in every NASCAR season. Martinsville Speedway, the .526-mile track, built in 1947, is often referred to as a ‘paper clip’ for its unique flat shape and low-banked oval configuration. Martinsville not only tests the mechanical fortitude of race teams, but patience as well.

Martinsville Speedway has always been a difficult test for Sprint Cup drivers and teams. Seven-time series champion Richard Petty is the all-time leader with 15 career Cup victories at Martinsville Speedway, while Darrell Waltrip is an 11-time winner.

The spring event at Martinsville, scheduled for March 28, will continue to be named the Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500. The fall event, scheduled for October 24, will continue to be named the TUMS Fast Relief 500.

2010 Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 Winner

Denny Hamlin won the Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway, beating Joey Logano to the checkered flag by 0.67 seconds. Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman and Martin Truex Jr. round out the top 5 in the running order. Denny Hamlin pushed the #11 Toyota to an average speed of 73.18 mph and led 172 of the race's 508 laps, taking home $179,225. The race ran 3:39:05 and saw 24 lead changes. Due to 13 yellow flags, the race spent 79 laps under caution.

2009 Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 Winner

Jimmy Johnson won a race at Martinsville Speedway in 2008, so he must know what he’s doing and exactly how to do it. In recent years Martinsville Speedway has been the personal playground of Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. Together they have won nine of the last twelve NASCAR Sprint Cup races held on the tight Virginia short track.
2009 Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 winner Jimmy Johnson has been finding his way toward the front. That, coupled with the fact that Martinsville is his best track gives him the edge with a lot of victories at Martinsville Speedway.

Johnson has owned the paper clip short track more so recently. With wins in four of the last five races and a series-high Driver Rating of 124.7, Martinsville ranks near the top of a crowded list of tracks at which Johnson excels. Johnson averages a top-10 finish in 10 of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ 22 tracks. His average Martinsville finish is 5.6. Only at Phoenix does the three-time champion fare better – his average finish is 5.5 there.

2008 Goody’s Cool Orange 500 Winner

The short track of Martinsville Speedway hosted the 2008 Goody's Cool Orange 500. The Sprint Cup drivers dodged a near-constant drizzle all day in Martinsville but were able to get the full 500 laps in.

Denny Hamlin was out front for the final long green flag run to the finish and was able to hold off a hard-charging Jeff Gordon to claim the win. Denny Hamlin started on the outside of the front row. Aric Almirola and David Ragan started in row number two while Jamie McMurray rounded out the top five starters.

With 50 laps to go Denny Hamlin was leading a pack of wolves that included Jeff Burton, Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson. Burton was closing the gap in traffic but Hamlin was holding them off as the laps were winding down.

The race ran green to the end. Jeff Gordon was making his way to the front but needed a caution to get the victory. His luck didn't hold and Denny Hamlin was able to pick up another win for Toyota.
